5 Exterior Home Improvements for the Summer

Jul 28, 2022

Summer is here, and there is no better time to give your exteriors an upgrade. The idyllic summer weather is convenient for home renovations and maintenance because you do not have to deal with harsh weather.

However, summer is a busy season, and between vacations and other social commitments, you may feel like you do not have time to tackle a home improvement to-do list. Still, some exterior improvement projects are best done during warmer months. Learn five exterior improvement projects to prioritize this summer.

1. Replace Your Windows

Drafty windows can result in heat loss during the colder months, which increases your heating costs. You may caulk your windows to stop the cold from seeping through. But, if caulk does not help, replace your windows.

Replacing your drafty windows during colder months can be a bad idea. When you remove your windows to replace them, you often lose more heat and end up with a colder house. But during the summer, the weather is warm.

2. Change Your Entry Doors

No matter how much you fix your landscape, your home will not have the right aesthetic if you have a battered front door. A weathered or warped door lets in drafts and may stick when you open or close the door. Also, the door might look unappealing.

You may have a hard time locking a battered entry door. An old door is also easy to break into, which is a security risk. If you do not like how your front door looks, replace the door in summer before the weather gets too cold to leave your entryways open.

3. Seal Your Deck

You likely use your deck often during the summer, so ensure the outdoor space is in top condition. Sealing your deck is another easy outdoor improvement project to undertake during the summer. Sealing your deck protects it from rotting in the wetter months.

Before sealing the deck, remove any mold or mildew growth, and ensure the surface is completely dry. While at it, inspect the surface for loose or damaged boards, and have your contractor fix them as soon as possible.

4. Replace Your Siding

Your siding wears over time and may start to rot and break off in some sections. Damaged and missing siding compromises your home's weather resistance. Thus, consider replacing the siding before the weather turns unfriendly.

Summer is an ideal time to install aluminum and wood siding. But, vinyl siding may expand in very hot weather, so make sure you install the siding during autumn.

5. Maintain or Replace Your Roof

A damaged roof compromises your home's energy efficiency and structural integrity. So, staying on top of repairs and maintenance for your roof is vital. Depending on the roofing material, a roof can last for several decades. If your roof is at the end of its lifespan, you might need to replace it.

If you have parts of your roof gaping, you want to ensure the weather outside is favorable. When you replace your roof during summer, ensure that no rain will ruin your house's interior.

New shingles require a consistent temperature to activate their weathertight seal. Cold conditions likely will not activate the seal on your shingles, exposing them to water damage. So, if you replace missing shingles or replace your entire roof, do it in the warm summer weather.

Just like your interiors, your exteriors require regular repairs and maintenance to remain in good condition. Kelly's Construction, Inc., is your best bet for all your exterior improvements. Contact us today to book an appointment with our contractors. We look forward to meeting with you!
